Rooms Amenities
All guestrooms at The Culpeper include amenities such as free WiFi, espresso makers, and free bottled water. Rooms are fitted with a seating area, a flat-screen TV with cable channels, and a private bathroom with a hairdryer and a shower. Small blue-tiled bathrooms have powerful rain showers and Bramley products in large bottles. The Krups coffee machine, fresh milk in a flask, and large glass bottles of filtered water are provided. All rooms feature rough-hewn walls, preserved fireplaces and perhaps an acapulco chair draped with a colorful woven throw. A stack of books concerning East London is artfully styled on the bedside tables. Requests for king or queen size beds are subject to availability.
Dining Options
The Culpeper first floor is an English bistro focusing on well sourced ingredients cooked with classical techniques. A small buffet offers pastries, poached pears and thick yogurt, homemade butter and jams for slathering on hunks of sourdough. There is also a cooked option such as thick-cut slices of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs or poached eggs with a harissa-spiked spicy tomato stew. The restaurant is open 12-3pm & 6-10pm on Saturday. The restaurant is open every day except Sunday. The first floor restaurant is open 6-10pm every day except Sunday. Pub lunch is served 12-3pm. The kitchen will close at 6pm on Sundays. Bar snacks are available. The rooftop grill offers seasonal dips and grilled vegetables, spiral chipolata with mustard & onions, Rhug Estate chicken leg with garlic aioli & grilled leeks with a pumpkin seed pesto. There is a low-intervention wine list to choose from, as well as seasonal cocktails with rooftop garnishes and local beers.
Rooftop & Garden
Guests sit amongst growing herbs and veg for the kitchen and cocktails. The rooftop features a space to learn about, be inspired by, grow, and cook with locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Herbs are supplemented with courgettes, beans, tomatoes, chilies, aubergines, and some root veg in the summer. The garden is 1,400 sq ft and growing space around 500 sq ft. The rooftop is planted with a perennial woodland focus, with birch and hazel trees, amalancier and crab apple. There are berries and grasses and calendula, mints, wild strawberries and woodruff. Guests enjoy a view of London's city skyline. The rooftop menu is served communal style in the middle of the table. The rooftop is open Mon - Fri 12 - 2:30, 6 - 8.30, Sat 12 - 3:30, 6 - 8.30 for food and 12 - 10:30pm for drinks.
Location & Access
The Culpeper Bedrooms is located in Whitechapel with many traditional pubs and curry houses. It sits on Commercial Street, one of Shoreditch's main arteries, a mix of glassy new-builds, creative agencies and some surviving old corner shops and takeaways. It is also less than 1 km away from Liverpool Street Underground Station. Landmarks nearby include Brick Lane (0.5 km), Borough Market (2 km), Museum of London (2 km), St Paul's Cathedral (2 km) and Monument to the Great Fire of London (1.5 km).
Hotel Services
The Culpeper Bedrooms offers free WiFi. The ground floor pub is dog friendly, and the rooftop can accommodate the occasional small, well behaved dog, but dogs are not allowed in the first floor restaurant. There is a restaurant, a garden, a terrace and bar in London. An intimate private dining space in the rooftop greenhouse is available for up to 10 people, with a private terrace. Staff are efficient but easygoing explaining the natural wines in an accessible manner.
“Staying above a lively pub adds character, yet rooms remain peaceful; plus, its proximity to East Aldgate station simplifies getting around a neighborhood brimming with restaurants. Though breakfast requires a short walk to a sister hotel, the urban style and rooftop views are definite highlights. A comfortable, convenient base for exploring London.”
